El protestantismo en Chile es de larga data, sin embargo su actividad pública comienza a gestarse en el periodo independentista de nuestro país, con la invitación que O'Higgins le hace a Diego Thompson, para introducir en Chile el método "Lancasteriano" de enseñanza de lectura. Lo más significativo en esta época fue la instalación de un cementerio para disidentes en la ciudad de Valparaíso en 1819 (perola construcción del cementerio se concretó el año 1823, cuando las comunidades residentes compraron un terreno para ese fin); hasta entonces los muertos se sepultaban clandestinamente o se tiraban al mar. Sin embargo, las constituciones de 1818 y 1822, mantuvieron al catolicismo como la religión oficial del Estado Chileno, por lo tanto la exclusión del ejercicio público de cualquier religión. Aunque el artículo 215 (del año 1822) formuló cierta tolerancia, estableciendo que a nadie se castigará por su pensamiento, ni por manifestación de ellos (Sepúlveda 1999: 25).Downloads
